Lewis Ferninand Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) was born on April 16, 1947, in New York. He started playing basketball at an early age. Jabbar was one of the greatest players in the history of basketball.
He was selected as an All-American player 3 times while playing for Power Memorial Academy during high school. His excellence on the field led to a scholarship at University of California, Los Angeles.
Playing for University of California Los Angeles from year 1965 to 1969, he became one of the nation’s top college basketball players. His role was very crucial when his team won 3 national championships from year 1967 to 1969 and also was named the NCAA ( National Collegiate Athletic Association) Tournament's Most Outstanding Player for those years.
In 1969, he joined NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. He started his career very strongly and scored more than 2,000 points in his first season with the team. In year 1970 he was named as Rookie of the Year. He led his team towards the victory in 1971 NBA championship. He also changed his name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar that year.
In year 1975 he shifted to the Lakers, and carried on to rule the game. He helped his team to win 6 National Basketball Association (NBA) championships and was awarded as the league's Most Valuable Player 6 times. In the course of game he used to play a signature jump shot popularly known as “skyhook." While playing with the Los Angeles Lakers, Abdul-Jabbar wrecked Wilt Chamberlain's scoring record. In year 1985 he was named as the Sports Illustrated Sportsman. His good show on the court led to some acting opportunities. Abdul-Jabbar acted in few films, including the 1979 film Game of Death and 1980 comedy film Airplane.
When he retired in 1989, he was the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points and became the first NBA player to play for twenty seasons. He played more than 1,500 games during his career.
