With the next NBA collective bargaining agreement (CBA) soon to be on the tables, the futures of a lot many high school basketball stars is going to be at stakes too. With the new CBA, the age limits for the hopefuls to go pro may see a change and put their careers in hands of fate.
The new CBA that talks of pushing the age limit to 2 years in college and 20 years by the end of the calendar year for the players has been a cause of worry for majority of high school players aiming to go pro. On the other hand almost a two third of the NBA teams seem to be in favor of the new criteria according to one general manager of the sport.
One such player whose sport career might as well be at stakes is the 18 year old high school hoops phenomenon Austin Rivers, son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers. Austin is one of the top ranked high school players and will be playing for Duke. He is now disappointed that he will potentially be losing the opportunity to make the choice.
Austin further added that he thinks that such a change would be unfair to the players who are ready to go pro. According to him, if they wait for another year they can face various uncertainties like risking an injury or other grave things.
Austin’s father, Doc Rivers had a mixed sentiment about the proposed CBA. On one hand he thinks that one more year can make the players mature but on the other hand, he thinks that they shouldn’t be stopping the ones who are ready to make that jump.
With a majority of teams backing the criteria change, will the new CBA bring in more maturity to the players on the court or will it just deter their progress in the sport, only the near future can tell. But it still remains a fact that it will surely lead to a lot of disappointment for the high school players who dream of going pro.
