Popularly known as Jay-Z, American rapper Shawn Carter is also a businessman and holds some stake in the NBA franchise, New Jersey Nets. Being a celebrity certainly attracts many controversies but pursuing to some unintelligent acts on the basketball court may be another reason for controversies; the fact was proven by Jay-Z.
Basketball is one of the most popular games around the world and especially in United States. So, single news regarding a superstar spreads across like wild fire. And the same seems to be the case with Jay-Z breaking the NBA rules.
In the month of April 2011, University of Kentucky was facing University of North Carolina in an Elite Eight game held at the Prudential Center in the state of New Jersey. Being a stakeholder in the local NBA franchise, New Jersey Nets, Jay-Z was present at the match and might have been impressed with the match. He went down in the locker room of University of Kentucky who had emerged victorious over their opponents to congratulate the players. There were ample of high-fives and handshakes that took place in the room and those were followed by some words of encouragement said by the rapper.
All this may appear like normal and feels like a display of sportsman spirit and appreciation towards the victors. But, the NBA rules contradict the fact! Yes, Jay-Z is among the minority owners of the Nets and accordingly he is not allowed to interact with any college players not eligible for the draft by rules of the NBA. Jay-Z may have broken few rules laid down by the National Basketball Association in regards with interacting with players but he surely hasn’t violated any NCAA rules by visiting the locker room. An investigation is on its way to know what Jay-Z might have talked with the players.
All in all, there may be a fine put down upon the franchise with Jay-Z liable for meager punishment once the investigation has been completed. Still, the question prevails; was it necessary for Jay-Z to go down in the locker room and talk with the players even it was just a gesture of congratulating the team on its success? The answer to this lies in the rift between rules imposed by the NBA and the thinking ability of human brain to express gestures. It was not at all wrong on Jay-Z’s part to get involved in the moments of victory by going down in the locker room. But at the same time, being the stakeholder of a big NBA franchise, it is essential to understand rules and keep them at the back of the mind every second!
