Nick Saban and his Statue

He’s living and yet, he has already been immortalized. He has also gone on to join a special league, which before his joining consisted only of other fours - Paul "Bear" Bryant, Frank Thomas, Gene Stallings and Wallace Wade.

His contributions to the football program have been so great that they have built a statue of him.

Nicholas Lou "Nick" Saban is the latest entrant on the ‘Walk of Champions’ outside the Bryant-Denny Stadium of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, an honor that is only reserved for an Alabama coach that takes the Crimson Tide to a national championship. The statue was unveiled recently as part of the celebration for the spring game that took place on April 16, fifteen months after Alabama won the BCS national championship by defeating Texas.

Jeremy Davis, a student of West Blocton, designed the 9 foot statue which depicts Coach Nick Saban shouting to encourage his team (open mouth), leaning forward and clapping his hands.

Before his contract with Alabama, Saban has served as head coach for NFL’s Miami Dolphins and other 3 NCAA universities, namely, LSU, Maimi State and Toledo. With a $32 million – 8 year contract, he has been the highest paid football coach in the country that time. With a collegiate head coach career record of 134–53–1, he has also been featured in the September 1, 2008 edition of the Forbes Magazine as, "The Most Powerful Coach in Sports". Apart from Paul "Bear" Bryant, Nick Saban is the only coach to win an SEC championship at 2 different schools.

Saban signed up with the University of Alabama in January 2007 and almost exactly 2 years later, the Alabama Crimson Tide won the 2009 BCS National Championship in January that year.
