The San Francisco 49ers utilized their first round draft pick in year 1985 on wide receiver Jerry Rice from Mississippi Valley State. In year 1986, Rice registered a season that started perhaps the finest stretch by any receiver in National Football League history.
That season, he caught eighty six passes for a league-leading 1,570 yards. He was also the topper of National Football League in touchdown catches with fifteen. It asterisked the first of eleven straight 1,000-yard seasons for Rice who also registered double-digit receiving touchdown totals in 9 of the next 10 seasons.
After that year, Rice made the National Football League record for touchdown receptions in a season with twenty two. His first of 4 seasons with 100 catches came in 1990 when he had an equal 100 receptions to lead the National Football league in that category. It marked the first of two receiving titles for Rice.
He led the National Football League in receiving yards 6 times including a National Football League record of 1,848 yards in year 1995. Rice also led the National Football League in touchdown receptions 6 times.
No wide receiver in National Football League history played more than Rice’s twenty seasons. He ended up his career with Seattle and Oakland, he was the most productive wide receiver in National Football League history with outstanding career totals.
He holds virtually every important receiving mark. Some of the more impressive career records include receiving yards (22,895); receptions (1,549); total touchdowns (208); most 1,000-yard receiving seasons (14) and combined net yards (23,546).
Rice possesses several National Football League playoff and Super Bowl records. He took part in 8 conference championships and 4 Super Bowls. He received 3 Super Bowl rings with the 49ers and was named the MVP of San Francisco’s Super Bowl XXIII victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
