Open Championship - The Year 2010

The 139th Open Championship golf played in the year 2010 is one of the four majors and it was played at St Andrews Old Course Fife, Scotland, during 15-18th July. This was the 28th time this golf championship was played at St Andrews as this court is considered to be the home of golf.

With 16 par total of 272, Louis Oosthuizen won the championship by finishing seven clear strokes of Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey and Lee Westwood. This was Oosthuizen’s first championship victory making a cut from his previous eight appearances at the 2008 PGA Championship.

The 2010 Open Championship ‘rota’ was the custom that is followed after every 5 years, which plays Old Course. Truly, more attention is given to the term ‘The Open’ as is has been derived from the series of historical links. The earlier championship played in 2000 and 2005 at St Andrews was bagged by Tiger Woods. The specialty of the 2010 Open Championship was the alterations in the course. It was lengthened by 40 yards and new tee was introduced at the 17th hole.

Every year more than two third of the players participated in the championship, especially the players who are exempted from qualifying for the Open. Players are then categorized on the basis of their qualifying statistics. This was the 28th time the first round of the Open Championship was hosted at St Andrews old course. Phil Mickelson struggled with his putter in this round and Tiger Woods switched over to Nike Method. South African, Louis Oosthuizen was in the 2nd place.

Noble players such as Jim Furyk, Tom Watson, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els missed the cut in the second round. Louis Oosthuizen’s consistency was well maintained in the second, third as well as the final round, which proved as the key factor in winning the championship.
